NHRA Richmond Final Results - Sunday
|
Spencer Massey and the U.S. Smokeless Racing dragster team fell in the first round of the NHRA Virginia Nationals on Sunday and sit eighth in the season point standings.
Massey, a leading NHRA Rookie of the Year candidate, entered the elimination round as the No. 3 qualifier after posting a career-best lap of 3.789 seconds on Saturday and was paired against No. 14 qualifier Scott Palmer.
Massey took the starting line advantage (.074 - .103) and was leading the race at the 60-foot mark (.842 - .874) when his tires began to spin. Massey needed to pedal the dragster to recover traction, while Palmer saw his engine suffer damage during his pass. At the end of the race it was Palmer's lap of 5.096/152 mph that took the win over Massey's 5.250/149 mph effort.
Brandon Bernstein posted a 3.844/307 mph pass to win the Top Fuel final over Antron Brown (9.009/75mph). Del Worsham won Funny Car over Tim Wilkerson and Mike Edwards took the win in Pro Stock over Greg Anderson. At the completion of Sunday's race and with only two races remaining in the post season, the updated Top Fuel point standings are;
1. Tony Schumacher, 2,427; 2. Larry Dixon, 2,380; 3. Cory McClenathan, 2,359; 4. Antron Brown, 2,346; 5. Brandon Bernstein, 2,307; 6. Morgan Lucas, 2,269; 7. Shawn Langdon, 2,254; 8. Spencer Massey, 2,225; 9. Doug Kalitta, 2,218; 10. Clay Millican, 2,093.
Massey and Don Prudhomme Racing's Top Fuel team will return to its Brownsburg, IN race shop and has the next two weekends off before resuming action at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Oct. 30 - Nov. 1).
